Classic Car Games on Console You Can Still Play Legally

Table of Contents
You don’t need an old cartridge or a ROM folder to drive the classics again. Every classic car game below is sold or included today on a current console, through its publisher or platform holder.
- PS4/PS5: Twisted Metal 2 or Ridge Racer.
- Xbox One/Series X|S: Burnout Revenge, Ridge Racer or Rock N Roll Racing.
- Switch/Switch 2: Out Run, Ridge Racer, and Ridge Racer 64 if you subscribe.
Looking for modern games with vintage cars instead? Our guide to car games matched to how you like to play covers that.
ℹ️ Age & Spend Note: Ratings here run from E to T. Twisted Metal carries blood and violence descriptors, so check the ESRB entry before handing a controller to a child. Subscriptions renew on their own: for accounts of users aged 18 or older, Nintendo activates automatic renewal at sign-up. Check your platform’s account settings before you commit.
Can you legally play classic car games on console?
Yes. There are three legal routes:
- Buy a digital re-release (Arcade Archives, SEGA AGES, PlayStation’s PS1 conversions).
- Use a subscription library (Switch Online + Expansion Pack, Xbox Game Pass).
- Buy an Xbox 360 game that runs through Xbox backward compatibility.

How we picked these classic racers
Each pick had to pass three checks, and we left out two kinds of game.
Our three rules
- The game is sold today, or included in a named subscription.
- It runs on a current console.
- Its price, platforms and rating were confirmed against the publisher, the storefront or the ESRB.
What we left out and why
We left out anything playable only through emulation of files you didn’t buy. Whether a given setup is legal depends on where you live and what you own, and we aren’t the right source for that. Your console’s own store is the route we can confirm.
We also skipped modern games that only feature vintage cars.
Classic car games you can still buy on console
These four are one-time purchases with no subscription required.

The PS Plus classic to skip, and the ones you can’t get
Skip Twisted Metal III
Twisted Metal III is included with PS Plus Premium and costs $9.99 to buy, so subscribers try it first. It averages about 49 on GameRankings, the series’ lowest, while Twisted Metal 4 sits near 68. That’s an aggregate score, not our verdict.
For PlayStation car combat, Twisted Metal 2 is the better $9.99. The ESRB’s Twisted Metal 2 rating page lists its descriptors.
Still not officially available
Burnout 3: Takedown isn’t backward compatible on Xbox One or Series X|S, so Revenge is your current-Xbox Burnout. On Switch, SEGA AGES Virtua Racing supports up to eight local players on one console.
