Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 on Mac, sorted by what genuinely runs

Baldur's Gate 3 Mac compatibility illustration comparing native Apple silicon games with Intel games running through Rosetta

Start here: which Mac are you actually on?

Baldur’s Gate 3 runs on macOS, but only on Apple silicon — the macOS requirements on its Steam page list an M1 chip as the minimum, and Intel support disappeared when the game left early access.

If you’re on an M-series Mac

Everything below is for you. The catch nobody mentions: “has a Mac version” and “runs natively on Apple silicon” are two different claims, and the lists you just read treat them as one. Our full set of games matched to what you loved about Baldur’s Gate 3 covers every platform; this page is the Mac-native slice of it.

If you’re still on an Intel Mac

You can’t run the reference game at 1.0 at all, so this is the wrong page for you. The last section explains what changes next.

The four that run natively on Apple silicon

Four games like Baldur’s Gate 3 have genuine arm64 builds for M-series Macs: Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition.

  • Disco Elysium: The Final Cut — the dialogue and the skill checks
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition — consequence at blockbuster scale
  • Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition — the party, the arguments, the D&D
  • Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition — your friends and a toolset

How we checked, and how you can check any game

A Mac icon on a store page tells you nothing about which chip the game was built for — that single gap is why most Mac recommendation lists are wrong.

Use Finder’s Get Info window to see whether a Mac game is Apple, Universal, or Intel.

What we verified for each game

Official storefront requirements, the developer’s own patch notes where a native build was added, and current service status. Where a claim rested only on a third-party database, we said so rather than dressing it up.

The 10-second check on your own Mac

  1. Find the game in your Applications folder or your Steam library folder.
  2. Select it and press Command-I to open Get Info.
  3. Read the line marked Kind: Apple or Universal means native; Intel means it is being translated.

Apple’s own guidance on Intel apps and Apple silicon documents that check.

If you came for the writing and the choices

Two of the four are for the player whose favourite Baldur’s Gate 3 memory is a conversation, not a fight.

If you came for the party, the dice and the D&D

The other two are the mechanical ancestors, and both got native builds while everyone was looking elsewhere.

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Platforms: macOS (Steam, GOG, Mac App Store) · Architecture: native Apple silicon since patch 2.7 (verified 19 Sep 2026) · Length: ~55 hrs (community estimate) · Mode: single-player and multiplayer.

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

Platforms: macOS (Steam, GOG) · Architecture: native M1 build since patch 8193.32 (verified 19 Sep 2026) · Mode: single-player, online multiplayer, persistent worlds.

⚠️ Heads Up: Players have reported the Steam launcher starting the Intel build by default rather than the native one. Run the Get Info check above on the launched app, and switch to the native binary if it didn’t.

The three everyone recommends that aren’t native

No — Divinity: Original Sin 2 is not native on Apple silicon. Its macOS build is an Intel binary running through Rosetta 2, and Larian has never shipped an ARM version despite years of requests on its own forums. Solasta: Crown of the Magister and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are in the same position.

All three play acceptably today, and none of them is a bad game. The problem is the clock: Apple’s developer notice on the Rosetta timeline states that Rosetta remains through macOS 27, and that from macOS 28 it narrows to certain older, unmaintained games relying on Intel frameworks.

Buying a 100-hour Intel-only RPG this year carries a question the store page won’t raise.

Questions Mac players ask before buying

1. Does Baldur’s Gate 3 run natively on Mac?

Yes. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a native Apple silicon build; Larian’s published minimum is an M1 chip.

2. Can Intel Macs run Baldur’s Gate 3?

No. Intel support ended when the game left early access, so games like Baldur’s Gate 3 on Mac now means Apple silicon.

3. What does native mean compared with Rosetta?

Native means the game was compiled for the M-series chip. Rosetta translates an Intel build while you play.

4. Is Divinity: Original Sin 2 native on Apple silicon?

No. Its Mac version is an Intel binary running under Rosetta 2, with no ARM build released.

5. Is Solasta native on Apple silicon?

No. Solasta ships an Intel macOS binary, so Apple silicon Macs run it through Rosetta translation.

6. When does Rosetta stop working?

Apple states Rosetta continues through macOS 27, then narrows in macOS 28 to certain older, unmaintained games.

7. Which native Mac RPG is closest to Baldur’s Gate 3’s writing?

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, where failed skill checks open new branches instead of ending the conversation.

8. Can I play the older Baldur’s Gate games natively on an M-series Mac?

Yes. Beamdog’s 2.7 patch added native Apple silicon support to Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition and its siblings.

9. Do any of these support co-op like Baldur’s Gate 3?

Yes. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition has multiplayer, and Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition adds persistent online worlds.

10. How do I check a game I already own?

Select the app, press Command-I, and read the Kind line: Apple or Universal is native, Intel is not.

What to buy tonight

For most people arriving here straight from a finished campaign, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is the one — the same party arguments, running natively, at the smallest outlay of the four. Take Neverwinter Nights instead if what you miss is the people you played with. Then run Command-I on something you already own; the answer is usually not what the store page implied.
